We depend on medications to keep us healthy, but what happens if the medication itself makes us feel worse?
Unfortunately, some patients do experience side effects when taking new pills, some more serious than others. While minimal side effects like headaches or fatigue can usually be managed, you should be aware of more dangerous side effects.
If you’re just starting out on a new medication, always read the instructions thoroughly and talk to your doctor about potential side effects. To help you out, here are five serious side effects to be familiar with.
1. Dizziness
Dizziness is one of the main side effects to look out for. Dizziness, vertigo, or feeling like you can’t balance properly is a serious condition and it can also impact your ability to drive, operate machinery, or function at work.
If you’re feeling dizzy, you may also feel faint, lightheaded, or feel like you’re floating. If you notice these symptoms, the safest option is to stay home and speak to your doctor for advice.
2. Memory Loss
Sometimes, certain medications are known to cause temporary memory loss. A few drugs known to do this include anti-anxiety drugs, sleeping aids, and cholesterol medicine.
Many people find CBD oil can help with some more mild medication side effects, without any side effects of its own.
3. Hallucinations
Another serious side effect of medicines can be hallucinations. Hallucinations are perceptions of images, smells, or sounds that seem real, but actually aren’t.
If you’re experiencing hallucinations, it can help to have someone else with you to help comfort and look after you. They can be very intense, so talk to your doctor immediately if you notice this side effect.
4. Depressive Thoughts
Some medications increase your risk of depressive and suicidal thoughts. This can be extremely dangerous, especially if you have a history of depression already.
If you’re experiencing depressive thoughts, you may lose your motivation to do things, you may feel negative and unhappy, and you may question if life is worth living. These thoughts will tend to go away after stopping the medication causing them, but always talk to your doctor for advice.
5. Blood Clots
Blood clots are another serious side effect of certain medications. If blood clots form within a vein, it makes it harder for blood to flow through your body, risking blood not reaching important internal organs.
There are quite a few symptoms of blood clots, including skin discoloration, fever, and shortness of breath, so be aware of all possible symptoms.
Always 911 if you experience acute symptoms like breathing problems or signs of a stroke.
Call Your Doctor If You Experience These Side Effects
If you’re taking medication, be aware of the serious side effects mentioned above. If you’re concerned about them, talk to your pharmacist or doctor, but don’t stop taking the medication unless your doctor tells us to do so.
Fortunately, most medication side effects are mild and easy to live with, so most people will never have to deal with those mentioned above. However, it’s always good to be aware of potential risks.
